JOE TURNER: Dollar Star
Taking psychedelic pages from the Bevis Frond, Syd Barret, early Pink Floyd,
Spacemen 3, and early Moody Blues, Abunai! drummer Joe Turner turns in an
impressive batch of songs that unfortunately come in the form of a solo
album. Lacking the bombast and instrumental flatulence of the last couple
of band offerings, Joe Turner's solo effort relies heavily on great songs,
layers of harmony, droning guitars, lots of percussion and an unfailing
sense of melody. Listening to this is like taking a bubble-bath in sound.
Even more impressive is the fact that Joe plays all the instruments himself,
and though the mix lacks the sparkle of an Abunai! album, the sounds and
ideas are fresh, exciting, and deliciously retro! If Joe is trying hard to
impress with this release, he's succeeding on many levels. Nicely done!
